Pinus strobus

Eastern White Pine has a bad reputation due to its ubiquitous use as construction material. However, Eastern White Pine is actually a very challenging wood to bring to a high degree of crispness and detail. This is because in order to attain crisp detail, softer woods require sharper tools. Also, from a historical perspective White Pine is a fascinating wood. During the 1600โ€™s and 1700โ€™s tall white pines with high quality wood were known as mast pines. Marked by agents of the English Crown in colonial America, these pines were marked with a broad arrow and they were reserved for the British Royal navy. During the American Revolution the rebellious colonists would make it a point to cut down and haul away as many of the kingโ€™s trees as possible.
